Abstract

Abstract A hydrophobic polymer is hydrophilized by polymerizing thereon a compound having the formula R4R1 ¦¦ (1) R5CH=C-COO(R6O)n-Si--R2 or ¦ R3 R4R1 ¦¦ (2) R5CH=C-COOR7 -OSi--R2 m ¦ R3 where R5 is hydrogen or lower alkyl, R4 is hydrogen, lower alkyl, halogen of atomic weight 9 to 80, phenyl or cyano, R6 is alkylene or haloalkylene of 2 to 4 carbon atoms, R7 is alkylene of 3 to 6 carbon atoms, n is an integer of 1 to 4, m is an integer of 2 to 5 and R1, R2 and R3 are lower alkyl, phenyl or tolyl and thereafter hydrolyzing off the silyl groups. Silylated copolymers can also be prepared to form the hydrophilic coating.
