Abstract

Abstract Damping of turbine or compressor vanes loosely supported in an outer shroud is accomplished by means of resilient metal damping pads which have slots to accommodate the outer ends of the vanes. The damping pads engage the opposite sides of the vanes and the slots are formed so as to provide gaps or relief areas between the pads and the side and end edges of the outer ends of the vanes.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 169 words
A turbine vane or compressor assembly including: a plurality of turbine vanes arranged about an axis with each vane extending in a generally radial direction relative to said axis, each of said vanes having an inner end and an outer end; an inner shroud to which the inner ends of the vanes are secured; an outer shroud having openings therein through which the outer ends of the vanes project; a plurality of compressible pads made of metal wire surrounding the outer shroud, each of said pads comprising at least one slot in one surface thereof with the outer end of one of said vanes extending into said slot; and means surrounding and secured to said outer shroud for holding said pads in position relative to said outer shroud; said slots being shaped and sized so that the opposite sides of each outer vane end is engaged by said pad and the side edges and the end edge of each outer vane end are in non-engaging relation with said pad.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 169 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 30 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each pad is made of a plurality of layers of a wire mesh fabric which are mechanically interlocked to form a porous compressible mass.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each pad is made up of a number of layers of a wire mesh fabric which have been mechanically interlocked by compressive deformation.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 20 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said vanes are curved in cross-section, and said slots have a corresponding longitudinal configuration.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 17 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the length of said slots exceeds the width of said vanes.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 18 words
Apparatus according to claim 5 wherein said slots extend from one edge to the other of said pads.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 26 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein each pad comprises at least two slots with an outer end of a vane extending into each of said slots.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 12 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said pads have a rectangular configuration.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 12 words
Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein said pads have a parallelogram configuration.
