Abstract
Abstract wherein Ar is an aromatic residue, X is a halogen with carbon monoxide and an alkali or alkaline earth metal oxide hydroxide or carbonate in the presence of a metal carbonyl catalyst and in the additional presence of a mixture of water and an alcohol. A process for preparing an aryl acetic acid which comprises contacting a compound of the formula
