Abstract

Abstract The method includes a shaping step utilizing the good shaping characteristics of thermoplastic material prior to the application of local fiber reinforcement. After shaping high strength fiber reinforcement is applied in the form of tapes. Both adhesive and base material matrix bonding methods of securing the reinforcing tapes are contemplated. For finished parts, that require a smooth surface, it is possible to mold a recess into the surface of the thermoplastic material to accommodate the tape and produce a substantially continuous smooth outer surface.
