Abstract

Abstract Apparatus is disclosed for producing synthetic plastic sheet material having a multicolor striated pattern therein. The composite stream containing at least one band of differentially colored material in a matrix resin is passed through a perforated member having apertures therein separated by narrow solid segments which results in some interference with the lineal flow of the composite stream and effects striations of the differentially colored material within the matrix. A screen member supported in a perforated insert is specifically disclosed, and generally the bands of color extend diagonally across the sheet material.

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 244 words
An extrusion assembly for fabricating synthetic plastic sheet material having differentially colored bands with striations therein extending along the length thereof and comprising: a. an extrusion die block having a chamber therein, an elongated extrusion orifice in one surface thereof and a discharge passage between the said chamber and said orifice; b. a first feed conduit to said chamber at a point spaced to the opposite side thereof from said discharge passage for supplying a matrix of fluid synthetic thermoplastic resin; c. at least one additional feed conduit to said chamber having a portion within said die member extending generally parallel to said extrusion orifice for supplying a differentially colored fluid synthetic thermoplastic resin; d. at least one sleeve member within said chamber spaced from said discharge passage and extending generally parallel to said extrusion orifice, said sleeve member having a bore therein communicating with said additional feed conduit, said sleeve having a multiplicity of discharge openings communicating with said bore and opening adjacent said discharge passage; and e. a perforated member in said discharge passage occupying the full depth of said passage and having a multiplicity of perforations therein, at least some of said perforations being closely spaced apart to provide narrow solid segments therebetween, whereby the composite stream passes through the perforations of said perforated member prior to discharge from said orifice and the differentially colored fluid synthetic plastic resin is caused to flow about the narrow solid segments between said perforations.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 244 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
The extrusion assembly in accordance with claim 1 wherein said perforated member comprises an insert block having perforations therein and a screen member retained within said insert block whereby the composite plastic stream passes through block perforations and the openings of said screen member, said screen member providing said narrow solid segments.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 54 words
The extrusion assembly in accordance with claim 1 wherein there are provided a pair of sleeve members in said chamber vertically spaced above and below the center line of said chamber, and wherein there are provided distributor elements in the bores of said sleeve members providing intermittent flow of resin through said discharge openings.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 52 words
The extrusion assembly in accordance with claim 3 wherein means are provided for driving said distributor elements to provide intermittent flow, said means driving said distributor elements of said sleeve member above the center line oppositely from the direction of movement of the distributor element in the sleeve below said center line.
