Abstract

Abstract An electrohydraulically controlled cut off saw for accurate cutting of continuously moving stock traveling at a high rate of speed. The cut off saw includes a carriage movable in a forward direction the same as the direction of travel of the stock and in a reverse direction opposite to the direction of travel of the stock. Acceleration, deceleration, and movement of the carriage in both the forward and reverse directions is controlled in response to sensed movement of the stock by the control system. A multiple pressure hydraulic source supplies hydraulic fluid to a cylinder for moving the carriage in such a manner that the pressure of the fluid to the cylinder is lower during acceleration and deceleration than during normal movement of the carriage. A unique selectively latchable follower pivoted to the carriage, cooperates with a cam to traverse the saw carriage to cut the stock during forward movement of the carriage. The latch is disabled during reverse movement of the carriage so there is no cutting movement of the carriage when the carriage returns to its start or home position. The stock is clamped during cutting by a clamp on the carriage. A manual control provides for manually controlling movement of the carriage to a set-up position while maintaining the electrohydraulic system in synchronism.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 135 words
A cut off saw for cutting continuously moving stock traveling at a high rate of speed comprising: a carriage moveable along the path of travel of the stock; a saw mounted on the carriage for transverse movement to cut the stock; a hydraulic cylinder for accelerating, decelerating, and moving the carriage in a forward direction, and in a reverse direction; a controllable multi-pressure source of hydraulic fluid for delivering high pressure fluid and a lower pressure fluid; control means for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid from the source to the cylinder to control the movement of the carriage; and means for controlling the source to deliver lower pressure fluid to the cylinder during accelerating and decelerating of the carriage, and to deliver high pressure fluid to the cylinder during travel between accelerating and decelerating.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 135 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 186 words
A cut off saw for cutting continuously moving stock traveling at a high rate of speed comprising: a carriage moveable along the path of travel of the stock; a saw mounted on the carriage for transverse movement to cut the stock; a hydaulic cylinder for accelerating, decelerating, and moving the carriage in a forward direction, and in a reverse direction; control means for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid from the source to the cylinder to control the movement of the carriage; means for controlling the velocity of the carriage in synchronism with the velocity of the stock; a cam having a track extending along the path of travel of the carriage, a follower engaged in the track and coupled to the saw to traverse the saw in response to movement of the carriage, the track having an opening beyond the normal limit of travel of the carriage, and manually operable control means to move the carriage to a position adjacent said opening to permit manual traverse of the carriage, said manual control means maintaining the synchronism of the means for controlling velocity of the carriage.
Claim 4
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 218 words
A cut off saw for cutting continuously moving stock traveling at a high rate of speed comprising: a carriage movable along the path of travel of the stock; a saw mounted on the carriage for transverse movement to cut the stock; a hydraulic cylinder for accelerating, decelerating, and moving the carriage in a forward direction, the same as the direction of travel of the stock, and in a reverse direction opposite to the direction of travel of the stock; control means for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid from the source to the cylinder to control the movement of the carriage; means for traversing the carriage to cut the stock during forward movement of the carriage and comprising, a cam extending along the path of travel of the carriage, a follower pivotally connected to said carriage, latch means for latching the follower rigid with carriage to cause the cam and follower to traverse the carriage, and means to enable the latch means to latch the follower so the follower and cam traverse the carriage and cut the stock during forward movement of the carriage; and means to disable the latch means to permit the follower to pivot with respect to the carriage during reverse movement of the carriage, so traverse is eliminated during reverse travel of the carriage.
Claim 6
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 78 words
A cut off saw according to claim 4 which further includes clamp means on the carriage to clamp the stock to the carriage; means responsive to movement of the stock to close the clamp means to clamp the stock during travel of the carriage in the forward direction and prior to cutting the stock; and means responsive to movement of the stock to open the clamp means and release the stock prior to reverse movement of the carriage.
