Abstract

Abstract An electrical terminal structure is disclosed which is provided with a flow deposited quantity or band of solder adhered to a selected portion of the terminal and limited from spreading over the surface of the terminal by the presence of a soldernonwettable material adjacent to but not necessarily touching the terminal. A method of mounting the banded electrical terminals in plated apertures provided in a substrate is also disclosed, wherein the solder bands are applied to the terminals according to the above mentioned application technique. A technique of flattening the solder bands, and the resulting terminal structures having flattened solder bands adhered thereto are also disclosed. Flattening of the solder bands facilitates insertion of the banded terminals into the plated apertures by changing the shapes of the solder bands and by reducing their structural integrity though the creation of numerous hairline fractures.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 82 words
An article of manufacture, comprising: an electrical contact structure including an elongated body of conductive material; and, a quantity of solder adhered to said elongated body of conductive material, said quantity of solder formed into a band surrounding a limited portion of said elongated body of conductive material and said band having two flattened surfaces formed thereon, said quantity of solder further including a plurality of flange portions extending outwardly between said flattened surfaces, said flange portions being riddled with hairline fractures.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 82 words
An article of manufacture, comprising: an electrical contact structure including an elongated body of conductive material; and, a quantity of solder adhered to said elongated body of conductive material, said quantity of solder formed into a band surrounding a limited portion of said elongated body of conductive material and said band having two flattened surfaces formed thereon, said quantity of solder further including a plurality of flange portions extending outwardly between said flattened surfaces, said flange portions being riddled with hairline fractures.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 98 words
An electrical contact for mounting within an aperture of a mounting member, comprising: an elongated body portion of conductive material, a band of solder encircling and adhered to a medial portion of said body portion, said band of solder being compressibly deformed and provided thereby with fractures in portions of said solder band facilitating at least partial shearing away of said portions when forced into an aperture of a mounting member, and said band of solder being compressibly deformed to a reduced width thereby facilitating forcing said reduced width solder band into an aperture of a mounting member.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 98 words
An electrical contact for mounting within an aperture of a mounting member, comprising: an elongated body portion of conductive material, a band of solder encircling and adhered to a medial portion of said body portion, said band of solder being compressibly deformed and provided thereby with fractures in portions of said solder band facilitating at least partial shearing away of said portions when forced into an aperture of a mounting member, and said band of solder being compressibly deformed to a reduced width thereby facilitating forcing said reduced width solder band into an aperture of a mounting member.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 28 words
The structure as recited in claim 2 wherein the width of said solder band is reduced by deforming the solder band with flattened surfaces on opposite sides thereof.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 43 words
The structure as recited in claim 2 wherein said solder band is deformed by flattened surfaces on opposite sides thereof, and said solder band further is provided with outwardly extending portions defined between said flattened surfaces, said outwardly extending portions containing said fractures.
