Abstract

Abstract In a process for the preparation of alkali cellulose comprising steeping cellulose pulp in an excess of caustic soda solution to produce alkali cellulose, removing excess caustic soda solution from the alkali cellulose, comminuting the alkali cellulose, adding ball-milled cellulosic material to the alkali cellulose to form a mixture thereof, and mechanically agitating the mixture, the improvement wherein the ball-milled material is added to the alkali cellulose by: A. FORMING AN AIR SUSPENSION, AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, OF BALLMILLED CELLULOSIC MATERIAL HAVING A PARTICLE SIZE LESS THAN ABOUT 120 MICRONS; B. FEEDING COMMINUTED ALKALI CELLULOSE INTO THE SUSPENDED CELLULOSIC MATERIAL TO FORM AN INTIMATE MIXTURE THEREOF; AND C. ALLOWING THE MIXTURE TO SETTLE, WHEREUPON THE SETTLED MIXTURE IS MECHANICALLY AGITATED.

Claim 1
Independent Claim 130 words
IN A PROCESS FOR THE PREPARATION OF ALKALI CELLULOSE COMPRISING STEEPING CELLULOSE PULP IN AN EXCESS OF CAUSTIC SODA SOLUTION TO PRODUCE ALKALI CELLULOSE, REMOVING EXCESS CAUSTIC SODA SOLUTION FROM THE ALKALI CELLULOSE, COMMINUTING THE ALKALI CELLULOSE, ADDING AT LEAST ONE BALL-MILLED CELLULOSE MATERIAL SELECTED FROM THE GROUP CONSISTING OF REGENERATED CELLULOSE, WOOD PULP, WOOD PULP PRODUCTS, AND MONTREE CELLULOSIC MATERIAL TO THE ALKALI CELLULOSE TO FORM A MIXTURE THEREOF, AND MECHANICALLY AGITATING THE MIXTURE, THE IMPROVEMENT WHEREIN THE BALL-MILLED MATERIAL IS ADDED TO THE ALKALI CELLULOSE BY: A. FORMING AN AIR SUSPENSION, AT ATMOSPHERIC PRESSURE, OF BALL-MILLED CELLULOSIC MATERIAL, B. FEEDING COMMINUTED ALKALI CELLULOSE INTO THE SUSPENDED CELLULOSUC MATERIAL TO FORM AN INTIMATE MIXTURE THEREOF, AND C. ALLOWING THE MIXTURE TO SETTLE, WHEREUPON THE SETTLED MIXTURE IS MECHANICALLY AGITATED.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 130 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 19 words
The process of claim 1 wherein the ball-milled cellulosic material has a particle size less than about 120 microns.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 13 words
The process of claim 2 wherein the ball-milled cellulosic material is regenerated cellulose.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process of claim 2 wherein comminuted alkali cellulose is fed into the path of descending suspended ball-milled material, forming a mixture of the alkali cellulose and ball-milled material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 28 words
The process of claim 4 wherein the comminuted alkali cellulose is a fluff composed of fiber groups having a nominal cross-sectional dimension of about 0.25 to 3 inches.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 26 words
the process of claim 5 wherein the alkali cellulose has an alkalinity of about 15 to 16% and a cellulose content of about 30 to 33%.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process of claim 6 wherein about 20 to 25 parts by weight of ball-milled regenerated cellulose are added to 100 parts by weight of alkali cellulose.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 18 words
The process of claim 2 wherein the air suspension of ball-milled cellulosic material is formed by air turbulence.
