Abstract

Abstract The present invention relates to a cutting insert and a holder therefor in which the insert is transferrable from a righthand holder to a lefthand holder which is a mirror image of the righthand holder by reversing the insert end for end. The insert, thus, has a cutting edge on each end with a respective cutting edge being usable in each of the said righthand and lefthand holders. The insert is relatively elongated with the cutting edges at the ends and the holder has an elongated pocket open on the top and on one side and toward one end in the bottom wall of the insert inclined downwardly toward the closed side of the pocket in the holder and is held in place in the pocket by a clamp member having end portions engaging the holder and a groove in the insert and held on the holder by a central clamp screw.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 152 words
In combination; a tool holder having an elongated pocket at one end open toward the front end and one side and the top, an elongated cutting insert in said pocket having cutting edges on the ends with one thereof protruding from the front end of the pocket, said insert having a lateral groove in the top wall, the bottom wall of said pocket and the bottom wall of said insert inclining downwardly toward the closed side of said pocket, said insert being symmetrical about a plane perpendicular to the top wall of the insert and containing the axis of said groove whereby the insert can be reversed end for end for mounting in a second holder which is the mirror image of the first mentioned holder, and a clamp member on said holder parallel to said insert and having a nose portion engaging said groove to clamp the insert in the pocket.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 152 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 67 words
The combination according to claim 1 in which said holder has a recess parallel to said groove and spaced rearwardly from the closed end of said pocket, said clamp element having a protrusion on the bottom engaging said recess, and a clamp screw between said protrusion on the clamp member and said nose thereon threaded into the holder to press said clamp member downwardly on said insert.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 52 words
The combination according to claim 1 in which the longitudinal axis of said pocket and insert are inclined to the longitudinal axis of said holder in one direction when the holder is viewed in plan, the protruding cutting edge extending in a direction substantially perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of said holder.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 66 words
The combination according to claim 1 in which the bottom wall of said pocket is formed by a shim member which has a bottom surface parallel to the top wall of the insert and an upper surface parallel to the inclined bottom wall of the insert, and a pin in the holder extending upwardly into said pocket and shim and locating the shim in the pocket.
