Abstract

Abstract Data storage and processing apparatus for storing and processing data for use by a video display monitor. The data storage and processing apparatus includes a random access memory having a general storage section arranged to store data including display character data to be displayed in horizontal display lines on the display surface of a video display monitor and control data for use in conserving storage space in the random access memory. The memory conservation control data contained in the general storage section of the random access memory includes coded new line characters each of which represents the beginning of a new display line of the video display monitor. Each new line character is preceded in the random access memory by display data for the preceding display line of the video display monitor and followed by display data from the new display line. Each coded new line character is received and decoded by decoding circuitry coupled to an output of the random access memory. For each decoding of a coded new line character, the memory is inhibited from any further readout of data characters and coded space characters are caused to be established repeatedly and continuously in an output buffer circuit until such time as the end of a display line is reached, and a new line begins. By use of the coded new line character and its processing in accordance with the present invention, the need for using several space characters in the memory to fill out a given line of characters to the maximum possible length (e.g., 80 characters) is avoided.
