Abstract

Abstract Water pickup is minimized in the recovery of oil from water, including sea water, by negatively electrostatically charging hydrophobic rotating discs which are immersed in the water. Oil can be applied to the discs to help maintain the charge in the oil phase. The application of oil to the discs can also be used to remove thin films of oily material which contain oil-soluble contaminants from the surface of a body of water.
