Abstract An improved Claus process control system utilizing first and second coulometric titrators for automatically controlling the amount of oxygen used in burning a portion of the hydrogen sulfide (H2S) in flue gases. The first and second titrators are fed sulfur dioxide (SO2) scrubbed and unscrubbed samples, respectively, of the flue gases downstream of the oxygen injection point. The first and second titrators produce H2S and H2S + SO2 analog output signals, respectively, which are used to control the rate of flow of oxygen or air injected in a manner such that the samples of the flue gases contain H2S in a concentration which is approximately or exactly equal to twice the concentration of the SO2 therein.
THE METHOD OF CONTROLLING A PROCESS COMPRISING THE STEPS OF: PRODUCING A FLOW OF HYDROGEN SULFIDE (H2S) IN FLOW CONFINING APPARATUS, INJECTING OXYGEN INTO AT LEAST A PORTION OF SAID H2S FLOW UNDER CONDITIONS TO OXIDIZE A PORTION OF SAID H2S FLOW, REMOVING A SAMPLE OF THE SULFUR DIOXIDE (SO2) AND PRODUCTS OF SAID OXIDATION AND THE REMAINDER OF SAID HYDROGEN SULFIDE AND OTHER FLOW, IF ANY, SCRUBBING A PORTION OF SAID SAMPLE TO REMOVE THE HYDROGEN SULFIDE THEREIN AND TO PASS THE SULFUR DIOXIDE THEREIN, TITRATING THE SCRUBBED AND UNSCRUBBED SAMPLE PORTIONS TO BE DETERMINE THE RATIO OF THE CONCENTRATION OF THE HYDROGEN SULFIDE THEREIN TO THE CONCENTRATION OF THE SULFUR DIOXIDE THEREIN, AND VARYING THE OXYGEN FLOW RATE IN A SENSE TO CAUSE SAID RATIO TO BE APPROXIMATELY 2:1.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
54 words
The invention as defined in claim 1, wherein hydrogen sulfide is combined with sulfur dioxide in said flow confining apparatus downstream of the oxygen injection point to produce elemental sulfur according to the chemical formula: 2H2S + SO2 <- 3S + 2H2O where H, S and O are hydrogen, sulfur and oxygen atoms, respectively.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
29 words
The invention as defined in claim 2, wherein said sample is taken downstream of the point at which the hydrogen sulfide is combined with the sulfur dioxide, as aforesaid.
