Abstract

Abstract A process is disclosed for high speed production of uniform webs by air-laydown of textile fibers. A feed batt of staple fibers is fed to a toothed disperser roll that projects the fibers at high velocity and low angle into an airstream of high uniform velocity and low turbulence to form a thin fiber stream from which the fibers are subsequently separated in the form of a web. The webs are suitable for producing high quality nonwoven fabrics by known fiberinterlocking or bonding treatments.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 172 words
In a process wherein a batt of staple fibers is contacted in a transfer zone with the toothed surface of a disperser-roll revolving to disperse the fiBers in air from which the fibers are subsequently deposited on a moving screen; an improved highcapacity fiber-dispersion process for providing good fiber dispersion with low fiber breakage or nepping, wherein the improvement comprises feeding a loose fiber batt weighing from 40 to about 150 ounces per square yard into said transfer zone at a rate greater than 3 pounds per inch of disperser-roll width per hour, compressing the batt at the entrance of the transfer zone to a maximum density within the range of about 5 to 20 pounds per cubic foot, guiding the batt along a path in a substantially radial direction toward a disperserroll revolving at a surface speed of about 10,000 to about 20,000 feet per minute, and confining the batt to reach the toothed surface of the disperserroll at a density of about 2 to about 5 pounds per cubic foot.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 172 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The process defined in claim 1 wherein the loose fiber batt weighs about 50 to about 90 ounces per square yard.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
The process defined in claim 1 wherein the fiber batt is fed into the transfer zone at a rate of 6 to 20 pounds per inch of disperser-roll width per hour.
