Abstract

Abstract The invention relates to a quick release fastener of the kind which is arranged releasably to connect two members, such as panels, and which comprises a stud assembly arranged to extend through an opening in one of the members and a complementary socket carried by the other of the members the locking of the fastener being achieved by a boyonet type coupling. The fastener has a compression spring surrounding a shank of said stud and which is arranged to urge said stud out of said socket, and a cam slot or slots in said stud shank or in said socket adapted to cooperate with a corresponding pin or pins in said socket or on said shank respectively, said cam slot or slots being so arranged that when said stud is pushed into said socket against the action of said compression spring said pin or pins contact said cam slots rotating said stud into a locking position.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 258 words
A quick acting fastener which is locked by longitudinal reciprocation of one of the fastening members comprising: a cylindrical socket member having a cross pin extending diametrically thereacross and also having means for fixedly attaching it to a part to be fastened; a stud member having a head portion at the rear end and a relatively reduced shank portion at the forward end and also having means for attaching it to another part to be fastened for both axial and rotary motion, said stud member having at its forward end a pair of generally straight inclined portions meeting along a generally straight line at the terminal end of said stud member, a slot extending through said inclined portions transversely of said line and open at the forward end, and having extending rearwardly from said slot a pair of diametrically opposed cam slots, a locking shoulder on the forward wall of the cam slots for locking engagement with the cross pin upon rotation of the stud member, the wall forming each cam slot portion opposite the shoulder tapering axially rearwardly from the shoulder from a point substantially opposite to the shoulder and to a point circumferentially beyond the shoulder, so that axial reciprocation of the stud by pressing on the head causes the camming surfaces to engage the cross pin to rotate the stud member and cause the cross pin to have locking engagement with the cam slots; and a compression spring surrounding the shank of the stud to normally urge the stud member away from the socket member.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 258 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 37 words
A fastener according to claim 1, in which a grommet piece surrounds said stud shank and said compression spring acts between a shoulder at a head end of said stud and a corresponding shoulder in said grommet.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 69 words
A fastener according to claim 2, in which said grommet has an elongate body, through which said stud shank extends, and an external shoulder portion and a retaining washer adapted to be mounted on said grommet to hold said stud assembly in place through an opening in one of said members to be connected, said member adapted to be held between said external grommet shoulder and said retaining washer.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 51 words
A fastener according to claim 1, in which said socket part includes an external screw thread and an external shoulder, said socket adapted to extend through an opening in one of said members and to be retained therein between a nut threaded on said external screw thread and said external shoulder.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 25 words
A fastener according to claim 1, in which said stud has an enlarged head part having a knurled periphery to facilitate unlocking of said fastener.
