Abstract
Abstract A method and apparatus are described for filling the adjacent insulating tubes which form the positive plate of a lead-acid storage battery, wherein supplementary water is added to a pastelike mixture comprising one or more oxides of lead, sulphuric and water, the supplementary water being added in an amount sufficient to reduce the dynamic viscosity of the paste-like mixture and to form a suspension, and wherein the suspension is forced into the tubes within a period of time which does not allow the water to separate from the suspension.

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim
102 words
A METHOD OF FILLING A PLURALITY OF ADJACENT POROUS TUBES OF A LEAD ACID STORAGE BATTERY WITH A PASTE-LIKE MIXTURE HAVING LEAD OXIDE THEREIN COMPRISING THE STEPS OF: ADDING SUPPLEMENTARY WATER TO THE PASTE-LIKE MIXTURE TO REDUCE THE VISCOSITY TO FORM A SUSPENSION OF A REDUCED VISCOSITY WITH THE WATER SERVING AS A CARRIER FOR THE PASTE, INJECTING THE SUSPENSION UNDER PRESSURE INTO THE TUBES QUICKLY BEFORE THE SUPPLEMENTARY CARRIER WATER SEPARATES FROM THE SUSPENSION AND IN SUFFICIENT QUANTITY TO THE PREDETERMINED VOLUME OF PASTE FOR THE BATTERY TUBES, AND SEPARATING THE SUPPLEMENTARY WATER FROM THE PASTELIKE MIXTURE AND FROM THE SUSPENSION.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method according to claim 1 including the further step of reducing the viscosity of the suspension when adding supplementary water to 3,000 to 4,000 cP.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
26 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 in which the step of separating the supplementary water comprises exuding supplementary water out through the porous tube walls.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
21 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 including the further step of replacing the supplementary water when adding acid for charging.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
31 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 including the further step of injecting the suspension within the period of time of less than 1.5 seconds and at a substantially uniform rate.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
29 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 including the step of mixing the suspension immediately prior to quickly injecting to prevent the suspension from separating from the carrier water.
