Abstract

Abstract A self-calibrating measuring device in which a particular unknown dimension of a given specimen is compared with the corresponding known dimension of a master specimen. The requisite dimensional information regarding the master specimen is obtained by direct physical measurement of the master specimen. That information is then stored in a memory from whence it may be read out in order to compare it with dimensional information, regarding the unknown specimens. Operation of the device is digital throughout. Two modes of operation allow display of information indicative either of the deviation between the master and unknown specimens, or of the actual dimension of the unknown specimen. Measurement of the master specimen by actual physical sensing calibrates the device such that it may be used to measure any given number of unknown specimens. Re-calibration may be accomplished chiefly by inserting a new master specimen. Thereafter the respective dimensions of any given number of unknown specimens may be compared with that of the new master specimen.
