Abstract

Abstract A stuffing-box for sealing between an elongate member and a housing sleeve, in which packing material accommodated within a shouldered recess formed in the housing sleeve is pressed into contact with the elongate member by means of a loading medium introduced into the stuffing-box through ducting formed in the stuffing-box. Advantageously, the packing material is carried in a packing carrier which is mounted in the shouldered recess, and the packing material is in the form of a pre-formed packing sleeve, so as to permit the use of standardised packing sleeves and carriers for stuffing-boxes with shouldered recesses of different sizes.
