Abstract

Abstract A hydraulic tappet has a body and a reciprocal plunger within the body. The plunger has an internal oil chamber in communication with the exterior of the tappet body. A floating metering element is positioned within the plunger chamber and has a surface which cooperates with a mating surface on the plunger cap to meter oil from the chamber to the outer surface of the plunger cap.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 114 words
In a tappet, a tappet body having a bore therein, a hollow plunger reciprocally mounted in said body bore, an oil chamber within said hollow plunger, cooperating oil passage means between the exterior of said body and said oil chamber, spring means positioned in said bore normally urging said plunger outwardly therefrom, said plunger having a plunger cap and an oil orifice in said plunger cap communicating with said chamber, and a floating totally unconfined metering element in said chamber, the specific gravity of the floating metering element being less than the specific gravity of oil, cooperating metering means on said element and plunger cap for controlling the flow of oil through said orifice.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 114 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 36 words
The structure of claim 1 further characterized in that the inner surface of said plunger cap and said floating metering element have cooperating surfaces, formed to effect a seal therebetween except for a predetermined defined area.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 25 words
The structure of claim 2 further characterized in that said predetermined defined area is formed by a groove in the inner surface of said cap.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 17 words
The structure of claim 3 further characterized in that said metering Element is generally spherical in shape.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 24 words
The structure of claim 4 further characterized in that the inner surface of said cap facing said metering element is generally conical in configuration.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 75 words
The structure of claim 1 further characterized in that said floating metering element has a curved surface, the surface of said plunger cap facing said metering element having a portion formed to mate with the curved surface of the metering element, and a groove in said mating cap surface, in communication with said orifice, to control the flow of oil to the orifice when the floating metering element has mated against the plunger cap surface.
