Abstract
Abstract A method of handling corrosive substances and a titanium article for handling such substances. Titanium resists corrosion well, but is susceptible to attack by certain solutions at restricted crevices, as are formed where one piece of an article abuts another piece. Inserts of a metal which is compatible with titanium, but is more resistant to corrosion than titanium, are welded to the faces of each titanium piece where the piece confronts another piece. Restricted crevices are confined to the inserts.

Independent Claim
86 words
A TITANIUM ARTICLE FOR HANDLING SUBSTANCES WHILE CORRODE TITANIUM AT RESTRICTED CREVICES BUT TO WHICH TITANIUM IS OTHERWISE CORROSION RESISTANT, SAID ARTICLE COMPRISING AT LAST TWO TITANIUM PIECES WHICH CARRYING HIGH OHMIC RESISTANT FILMS FORMED BY POLARIZATION, MEANS JOINING SAID PIECES IN ABUTTING RELATION, AND INSERTS WELDED TO THE FACES OF SAID PIECES WHEREIN EACH PIECE CONFRONTS ANOTHER PIECE TO FORM A RESTRICTED CREVICE, THE RESTRICTED CREVICES IN THE ARTICLE BEING CONFINED TO SAID INSERTS, SAID INSERTS BEING OF A METAL WHICH IS COMPATIBLE WITH TITANIUM,

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
33 words
An article as defined in claim 1 in which said inserts are of a metal of the group consisting of tantalum, zirconium, columbium, molybdenum, vanadium, and alloys thereof and highly corrosion-resistant titanium-base alloys.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
14 words
An article as defined in claim 2 in which said inserts are of tantalum.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
24 words
An article as defined in claim 2 in which said inserts are of a titanium-nickel alloy containing up to about 5% by weight nickel.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
24 words
An article as defined in claim 2 in which said inserts are of a titanium-cobalt alloy containing about 0.3 to 5% by weight cobalt.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
29 words
An article as defined in claim 1 in which said pieces form a duct, and said joining means is a tape extending around the outer circumference of said duct.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim
40 words
An article as defined in claim 1 in which said pieces form the wall of a vessel and have external flanges where they are joined, and a gasket between said flanges, said joining means including bolts extending through said flanges.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim
115 words
A titanium article for handling substances which corrode titanium at restricted crevices but to which titanium is otherwise corrosion resistant, said article comprising at least two titanium pieces arranged for direct exposure to the substance, means joining said pieces in abutting relation, and inserts also arranged for direct exposure to the substance welded to the faces of said pieces where each piece confronts another piece to form a restricted crevice, the restricted crevices in the article being confined to said inserts, said inserts being of a metal which is compatible with titanium, but is more resistant to corrosion than titanium, and which avoids formation of a galvanic couple with titanium when exposed to the substance.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim
115 words
