Abstract The synthesis of 1-( Beta -D-2''-halogeno-2''-deoxyribofuranosyl)- and 1-( Beta -D-2''-mercapto-2''-deoxyribofuranosyl)pyrimidine derivatives from corresponding 2,2''-anhydro-1-( Beta D-arabinofuranosyl)-pyrimidine precursors is improved by utilization of N,N-dimethylformamide as the reaction solvent.
