Abstract

Abstract Disclosed are compositions and methods for glazing low-expansion ceramic ware with an opaque, non-porous, acid-resistant, lowexpansion, semi-crystalline glass-ceramic glaze which can be subjected to relatively high firing temperatures (relatively high with respect to firing temperatures for low-expansion glazes) without the formation of ''''wash boarding'''' or other surface defects associated with overfiring. The compositions are lithium aluminosilicate frits containing sufficient ZrO2 so that zirconia is present as a crystalline phase in the fired glaze. The invention shows particular advantage for making glazes of adjustable and low expansion for thermal shock-resistant ceramic whiteware, for example, dinnerware, cookware and ceramic tile.
