Abstract

Abstract A self-propelled continuous mining machine dislodges material from the face in an underground mine entry and forms a first unsupported roof portion of a preselected length. A first portable temporary roof support is transported on the mining machine to a location beneath the first unsupported portion of the mine roof. The portable temporary roof support has a plurality of piston cylinder devices that are connected by conduits to a source of fluid under pressure on the continuous mining machine. Fluid under pressure from the mining machine first extends the first temporary roof support laterally to a location adjacent the entry ribs and thereafter extends the vertical portions of the temporary roof support into abutting relation with the mine roof and the mine floor to support the first unsupported portion of the mine roof. Thereafter the conduits are disconnected from the temporary roof support and the continuous mining machine advances in the entry and dislodges material from the face to form a second unsupported portion of the roof having substantially the same preselected length. The mining machine is thereafter withdrawn from the entry and a selfpropelled vehicle with apparatus for inserting permanent roof supports is moved into the entry. The apparatus first inserts permanent roof supports in the first unsupported portion of the mine roof while the first unsupported portion remains supported by the first portable temporary roof support. A second temporary roof support is carried by the self-propelled vehicle and the self-propelled vehicle advances to a location beneath the second unsupported portion of the mine roof. The second temporary roof support is extended into abutting relation with the mine roof and mine floor to provide support for the second unsupported portion of the mine roof while the permanent roof supports are inserted in the second unsupported portion of the mine roof. Thereafter the self-propelled vehicle for inserting permanent roof supports is withdrawn from the entry and the continuous mining machine advances in the entry to the first temporary roof support. The hydraulic conduit from the mining machine is connected to the first temporary roof support and retracts the temporary roof support both laterally and vertically and carries the first temporary roof support on the mining machine. The mining machine thereafter advances and again repeats the above procedure for dislodging material and again forms two unsupported portions of the mine roof having preselected lengths.
