Abstract

Abstract An underwater timer and release device comprising a cylindrical housing sealed at its opposite ends and adapted to receive a slidable spring-loaded piston therein. The piston includes a metering orifice to provide a regulated flow of fluid from a secondary chamber to a primary chamber, thereby actuating a releasing means when the piston shaft is disengaged from a locking means and is allowed to operate. Releasably secured to the housing is a float marker, which rises to the surface of the water, having an interconnecting cord attached to the submerged housing. A one-way check valve is also disposed within the piston, whereby the fluid can be transferred back into the secondary chamber for reloading the release means.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 5
Claim 1
Independent Claim 253 words
A combination timing-and-float-marking device, comprising: a cylindrical housing having an upper wall and a removable lower end wall, wherein there is defined an enlarged compartment; a buoyant mass releasably attached to one end of said housing; means for releasably securing said mass to said housing, wherein said means is disposed therebetween; a piston means slidably disposed within said compartment, whereby the movement thereof operates said releasably securing means, said piston means comprising: a piston head having a rod secured thereto, one end thereof extending upwardly through said upper wall and downwardly through said lower end wall, a valve means disposed in said pistoN head to permit flow of fluid in one direction therethrough, a fluid-flow-regulating means disposed in said piston, whereby fluid flow is metered therethrough for controlled movement of said piston, and a biasing means operably disposed within said compartment between said upper wall and said piston head, thereby biasing said piston head in a direction whereby fluid is forced to flow through said regulating means; and wherein said compartment includes: a primary chamber formed in said compartment between said upper wall and said piston head, and a secondary chamber formed in said compartment between said lower end wall and said piston, and wherein said valve means comprises a one-way check valve so arranged within said piston head as to permit fluid flow from said primary chamber to said secondary chamber, and wherein said fluid-flow-regulating means permits fluid to flow into said primary chamber from said secondary chamber at a predetermined rate.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 253 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 55 words
A combination of a device as recited in claim 1 including: a connecting line attached at one end to said housing and at the opposite end to said buoyant mass, and a locking means for locking said piston means in an operating mode, said means being adapted for attachment to one end of said piston.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 88 words
A combination of a device as recited in claim 2, wherein said means for releasably securing said buoyant mass comprises: a pair of oppositely disposed spring-latching fingers pivotally mounted to said housing for direct latching to said buoyant mass; a pair of oppositely disposed sliding bars positioned within said housing, the outer ends of each bar being in contact with each respective spring finger; and a cam-release actuator attached to said upper piston rod for operating engagement with said sliding bars when said piston moves in said compartment.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 45 words
A combination of a device as recited in claim 3 wherein said fluid-flow-regulating means comprises a plug disposed in said piston head having an orifice extending therethrough, providing a communicating passage between said primary and secondary chambers, whereby said flow or fluid is predetermined thereby.
