Abstract

Abstract A digital speed control system having an input circuit which supplies a number of pulses to a memory register to generate and store therein a binary number representing a desired speed of the controlled apparatus. The input circuit enables a transfer circuit to transfer the binary number stored within the memory register to a countdown register. The input circuit then supplies a number of pulses representing the actual speed of the controlled apparatus to step the countdown register and subtract from the binary number therein the number representing the actual speed of the controlled apparatus. An in-zone error detector and a proportional control signal generator in conjunction with an error sign detector and an inverter which inverts the binary number contained within the countdown register controls a speed actuator to provide for proportional control when the error in the speed of the controlled apparatus is within a predetermined magnitude. An out-of-zone indicator in conjunction with the inverter and the error sign detector controls the speed actuator to provide for maximum acceleration or maximum deceleration when the magnitude of the error in the speed of the controlled apparatus exceeds the predetermined magnitude.
