Abstract

Abstract The production of titanium tetrachloride by chlorination of titaniferous ore is described. Titanium tetrachloride dryer residue obtained by drying titanium tetrachloride purification sludge is pelletized into agglomerates, and the agglomerates optionally calcined in an oxidizing atmosphere at temperatures sufficient to convert substantially all of the metal chloride values in the residue to the respective metal oxides. Carbon is also removed from the pelletized residue during calcination.
