Abstract

Abstract A sulfur oxide gas is passed through a fluidized bed of porous calcium oxide particles to form a lamination or coating of calcium sulfate over the external surfaces of the calcium oxide particles. There results a core of substantially pure calcium oxide and an outer lamination of calcium sulfate. The particles are then quenched rapidly from a temperature of approximately 850*F. to ambient temperature and a plurality of cracks result in the lamination of calcium sulfate. The resulting product is then used for making plaster or can be blended with other products to make cementitious products and the like.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 52 words
The process in accordance with claim 1 including the step of continuously monitoring the sulfur trioxide content of the incoming flow and proportioning the calcium oxide which constitutes said fluid bed to the available SO3 whereby the ratio of unspent calcium oxide to calcium sulfate coating is proportioned in a preferred ratio.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process in accordance with claim 2 wherein the coating of calcium sulfate is produced within a thickness range of from about 7.8 to about 23.2 microns.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 39 words
The process in accordance with claim 1 wherein the calcium oxide is formed of spongy lime particles which are loosely cohered together and wherein the calcium sulfate coating is developed throughout the interstices of the spongy calcium oxide material.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 22 words
The process in accordance with claim 1 wherein coated calcium oxide is blended with water and thoroughly mixed to form flooring plaster.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 29 words
The process in accordance with claim 1 including packaging calcium oxide particles having a coating of calcium sulfate in an anhydrous atmosphere to form a moisture free solid product.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 106 words
A process for producing improved materials of construction comprising passing sulfur oxide bearing gasses which originate as the oxidation product of burning fossil fuels, through a catalyst to convert substantially all of the sulfur dioxide to sulfur trioxide, then feeding the sulfur trioxide containing gasses into a particulate calcium oxide lime reactor for a time period to effect substantially complete reaction of the sulfur trioxide with the exposed particulate calcium oxide surfaces to form a calcium sulfate coating on said particulate calcium oxide and quenching such coated calcium oxide particulate material to form a plurality of thermal-shock-induced cracks in the surface of the calcium sulfate coatings.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 20 words
The process in accordance with claim 7 wherein the temperature within the lime reactor is not less than about 850*F.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 41 words
The process in accordance with claim 8 wherein the inflowing calcium oxide particles are subjected to a sudden heating from ambient temperature to reactor temperature of said lime reactor to effect heat-induced fracture of the lime particles to smaller particles thereof.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 27 words
The process in accordance with claim 7 wherein the lime reactor is maintained at a substantially constant temperature within a range of about 850*F. to about 880*F.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 37 words
A plastering material formed in accordance with the process of claim 7 wherein the calcium sulfate coating is in a weight ratio to unreacted calcium oxide in parts by weight of from about 1/4 to about 14/l.
