Abstract

Abstract H2S is removed from a gas stream containing H2S and CO2 without essentially affecting the CO2 content of the gas stream by contacting the gas stream, in an absorption zone, with an aqueous absorbent stream containing a water-soluble sulfite compound at thiosulfate production conditions, including a pH selected from the range of about 6 to about 7, selected to form a treated gas stream substantially reduced in H2S content and a rich absorbent stream which contains a thiosulfate compound and which is substantially free of elemental sulfur. Key feature of the disclosed method involves the careful selection of conditions in the scrubbing step to avoid the formation of elemental sulfur and to allow the selective production of a thiosulfate product.
