Abstract

Abstract Electro-mechanical means for selective raising of the needles in circular knitting machines having selector jacks individually related to the needles in the cylinder needle slots with the jacks having radially outwardly extending butts and jack selecting cams rotating relative to the needle cylinder with the cams electronically controlled to move between selecting and nonselecting levels, the cams at their selecting levels engaging butts of selected jacks to move the latter radially inwardly of the needle slots and the butts of the so moved jacks thereafter engaging the cams to return the same to their non-selecting levels. A permanent magnet associated with each cam is magnetically attracted to a fixed electromagnet between pulses of the latter to retain the cam at its non-selecting level, and is magnetically repelled from the electromagnet when the latter is pulsed to move the cam to its selecting level. A spring aids in the movement of each cam to its selecting level and a fixed stop plate to which the permanent magnet is attracted when the cam is at its selecting level acts to prevent vibration of the cam.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 10
Claim 1
Independent Claim 154 words
Needle selecting means for circular knitting machines having a vertically disposed slotted needle cylinder and having needles adapted to be raised and lowered in said cylinder needle slots, lengthwise extending selector jacks also in said slots, said jacks being selectively movable and being operatively related to said needles in such manner as to cause said needles to be selectively raised as a consequence of said selective movement of said jacks, a cam rotating relAtive to said cylinder and being movable between first and second levels in the first of which said cam moves selected ones of said jacks and in the second of which said jacks are unaffected by said cam, and said jacks and said cam being operatively related in such manner that each of said jacks so moved by said cam at its said first level thereafter causes said cam to be moved from its said first to its said second level.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 154 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 17 words
Means as in claim 1 wherein said jacks are movable radially of said slots by said cam.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 15 words
Means as in claim 2 wherein said jacks are pivotally movable about a fixed axis.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 70 words
Means as in claim 3 wherein said jacks are provided with butts extending radially outwardly from said cylinder at a predetermined level, wherein said cam at its said first level engages said butts to move said jacks radially inwardly, and wherein said butts of said so moved jacks thereafter engage said cam at its said first level to move the latter from its said first to its said second level.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 85 words
Means as in claim 4 wherein said butts have vertical and horizontal edges, wherein said cam has a plurality of cam surfaces, wherein one of said cam surfaces engages said vertical edges of said butts to move said jacks radially inwardly when said cam is at its said first level, and wherein other of said cam surfaces are thereafter engaged by said horizontal edges of said butts of said so moved jacks to move said cam from its said first to its said second level.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 58 words
Means as in claim 1 wherein a spring is operatively related to said cam to urge said cam from its said second to its said first level, and wherein said movement to said cam from its said first to its said second level by said jacks is sufficient to overcome the effect of said spring on said cam.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 116 words
Means as in claim 1 wherein a permanent magnet is operatively related to said cam and is movable between a pair of positions corresponding to said first and second levels of said cams, a fixedly positioned electro-magnetic adapted to be selectively pulsed, said permanent magnet being magnetically attracted to said electromagnet and being moved thereby to one of its said pair of positions between pulses of said electromagnet whereby said cam is retained at its said second level, and said permanent magnet being magnetically repelled from said electromagnet and being moved thereby to the other of its said pair of positions when said electromagnet is pulsed whereby said cam is moved to its said first level.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 52 words
Means as in claim 7 wherein a spring is operatively related to said cam to urge said cam from its said second to its said first level, and wherein said magnetic attraction between said magnets between pulses of said electromagnet is sufficient to overcome the effect of said spring on said cam.
Claim 10
Dependent Claim 54 words
Means as in claim 7 wherein a fixed stop plate is provided for said permanent magnet to position the same in the said other of its positions when said electromagnet is pulsed, said permanent magnet being magnetically attracted to said stop plate thereby to prevent vibration of said permanent magnet and of said cam.
