Abstract

Abstract The higher linear primary alcohols prepared in accordance with Ziegler chemistry contain contaminant amounts of similarly boiling diols. Upon contacting a dehydration catalyst with the impure alcohol product, the diols present therein are selectively converted into substantially lower boiling derivatives readily separated from the desirable alcohols by conventional thermal fractionation practices.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 63 words
AN IMPROVED METHOD FOR TREATING PRIMARY ALCOHOLS OBTAINED BY HYDROLYZING AN AIR-OXIDIZED MIXTURE OF ALUMINUM ALKYLS PREPARED BY GROWING ALUMINUM TRIETHYL IN THE PRESENCE OF ETHYLENE TO PROVIDE AN ALCOHOL PRODUCT ESSENTIALLY FREE OF DIHYDROXY COMPOUNDS WHEREIN THE IMPROVEMENT COMPRISES CONTACTING SAID PRIMARY ALCOHOLS IN THE LIQUID PHASE WITH A CALCIUM OXIDE ON ALUMINA CATALYST AT A TEMPERATURE BETWEEN ABOUT 170* AND 275*C.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 63 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 25 words
A method in accordance with claim 1 wherein the modified catalyst is contacted with the alcohols at a temperature between about 215* and 250* C.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 31 words
A method in accordance with claim 2 wherein the contacted alcohols are thermally stripped to remove essentially all components having a boiling point lower than the lowest boiling mono-alcohol present therein.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
A method in accordance with claim 3 wherein the contacted alcohols are hydrogenated followed by thermally stripping to remove substantially all components having a boiling point lower than the lowest boiling monoalcohol present therein.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 13 words
A method in accordance with claim 3 wherein the stripped alcohols are hydrogenated.
