Abstract

Abstract A cable core having stranded twisted pairs of insulated conductors is moved axially through a series of in-line chambers having interconnecting dies to facilitate the evacuation of air from voids of the interstitial structure of the core and the pressure-application of a waterproofing compound of jelly-like consistency into the air-evacuated voids. The compound-filled cable core is then passed through various stations where core wrap and sheathing materials are placed about the core in combination with additional applications of the waterproofing compound. A plastic jacket is extruded about the sheathing and is cooled prior to take-up of the jacketed cable onto a reel.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 221 words
Apparatus for applying a compound to a stranded article, which comprises: means for evacuating air from interstices of successive portions of the stranded article; a compound-applying section; means for moving the air-evacuated successive portions of the stranded article through the compound-applying section; means for moving amounts of the compound in a semifluid state into the compound-applying section and into contact with the successive portions of the stranded article to facilitate the drawing of portions of the semifluid compound into the airevacuated interstices of the successivee portions of the stranded article; a compound-conditioning section whereat the compound is placed in a jelly-like state, means for moving the compound-filled stranded article through the compound-conditioning section whereat the semifluid compound is conditioned to place the compound in a jelly-like state so that the compound is nonflowable and is retained within the interstices of the stranded article independently of any other supporting structure, and means for cooling the air-evacuated successive portions of the stranded article after the portions have been moved through the means for evacuating air and prior to the entry of the portions into the compound-applying section to place in a jelly-like state any portions of the compound which are drawn from the compound-applying section toward the means for evacuating air to preclude entry of the compound into the means for evacuating air.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 221 words
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 98 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises: means for heating the air-evacuated successive portions of the stranded article prior to the cooling of the portions by the cooling means to heat any portions of the compound which are drawn from the compound-applying section toward the air-evacuation means and through the area whereat the successive portions are cooled so that the heated portions of the compound are placed in a flowable state, and means for drawing the heated compound away from the air-evacuation means to preclude the entry of any compound into the air-evacuation means.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 60 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises: a temperature-gradient section, and means for moving the compound-filled stranded article through the temperature-gradient section immediately after the successive portions of the stranded article exit from the compound-applying section to reduce the temperature of the compound thereby initiating the process of conditioning the semifluid compound into the jelly-like state.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 39 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises: means for premixing constituents of the compound in a precise blend, and means for pumping the precise compound mixture directly from the mixing means into the compound-applying section.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 35 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 which further comprises: means for maintaining a pressure in the compound-applying section sufficient to assist in applying the compound into the air-evacuated interstices of the stranded article.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 69 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 1 wherein the cooling means comprises: an outer sleeve; an inner sleeve positioned within the outer sleeve to permit the passage of the successive portions of the strandeD article therethrough; a chamber formed between the outer and inner sleeves, the chamber being sealed, and means for circulating a cooling medium through the chamber to cool the inner sleeve and the interior thereof.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 37 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 6 wherein the inner sleeve is removable to permit the replacement thereof with other inner sleeves of different sizes to facilitate the passage of stranded articles of different sizes therethrough.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 59 words
The apparatus as set forth in claim 6 which further comprises: means for removably supporting the cooling means in a position which is in line with the compound-applying section, said supporting means movable for permitting the movement of the outer sleeve to a position other than the in-line position to facilitate the exchanging of one inner sleeve for another.
