Abstract

Abstract A method and apparatus for extricating an intricate ceramic casting from a multiple piece mold. This concept is adapted for use with multiple piece molds which have at least two, opposed, side sections that form a cradle by which the casting may be supported. The cradle is grasped and subsequently positioned at a receiving locus. So positioned, the support for the weight of the casting is shifted from the cradle onto a bat in order that the casting will float within the cradle. Thereafter, the sections of the mold forming the cradle are separated to extricate the casting therefrom. For some ceramic shapes it is highly desirable to invert the cradle prior to the deposit of the casting at the receiving locus. The subject concept includes such a method step. The apparatus disclosed comprises a carriage on which a plurality of multiple piece molds may be supported, means to separate the cradle from any other sections of the mold, an inversion mechanism for turning the cradle upside down, gripper means to grasp the cradle, transfer means within which the gripper means is supported and by which the cradle can be moved from the inversion mechanism to a receiving locus, a lift means at the receiving locus by which the support for the weight of the casting may be shifted from the cradle onto a bat and actuating means by which the gripper means -- and thus the mold sections forming the cradle -- can be separated after the weight of the casting is fully supported on the bat.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 6
Claim 1
Independent Claim 158 words
A system for extricating ceramic shapes from a multiple piece mold comprising; a cradle formed by opposed sections of a mold, a green casting supported by said cradle, a gripper means presenting a pair of tong means, each tong means selectively engaging one of the opposed mold sections forming the cradle, first means to effect actuation of each tong means in said pair between an open position in which each tong means may be moved into and out of engagement with the appropriate mold section of said cradle and a locked position in which each tong means grasps the appropriate mold section of said cradle, and second actuating means selectively to maintain said tong means in a first, juxtaposed position or a second, separated position and further selectively to move said tong means between said first and second positions while said tong means are disposed in the locked position, thereby separating the opposed mold sections of said cradle.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 52 words
A system, as set forth in claim 1, in which the tong means each employ interlock means for cooperatively engaging one face of a mold section in said cradle and a clamp means opposed to said interlock means for cooperatively engaging an opposite face of the same mold section in said cradle.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 58 words
A system, as set forth in claim 2, in which said clamp means comprises a clamp bar secured to a pivotally mounted clamp arm, and in which said first actuating means on each said tong means selectively swing the clamp arm to move the clamp bar into and out of engagement with the mold section in said cradle.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 41 words
A system, as set forth in claim 2, in which each interlock means comprises a button presented on a fixed leg on the tong means, and a socket in the mold section of each cradle for selectively receiving the corresponding button.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 51 words
A system, as set forth in claim 2, in which each tong means presents a flange, the flanges on the two tong means comprising each gripper means being spaced laterally outwardly with respect to the two interlock means and forming a shoe for stabilizing the cradle carried by said gripper means.
