Claim 1
Independent Claim
197 words
A guide assembly for a saw blade which comprises: a. a pair of saw guides, each guide having a substantially flat face; b. mounting means for holding said saw guides in opposed facing relationship to one another on either side of said saw blade such that the face of each guide is spaced a predetermined distance from a respective side of said saw blade when said saw blade is in a normal undeflected position, so as to form a gap of predetermined size between each said guide face and said undeflected saw blade; c. means for introducing a pressurized fluid into each of said gaps so as to cause said fluid to flow through said gaps; d. said predetermined size of each said gap being such as to cause said flow of fluid to exert a suction on each side of said undeflected saw blade in accordance with the Bernoulli principle, and further being such as to cause said suction to decrease if the respective gap size is decreased and to increase if the respective gap size is increased due to blade deflections, so as to provide a restoring force responsive to deflections of said saw blade.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim
54 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said means for introducing said fluid into said respective gaps comprises means defining a port located in the face of each said saw guide and a fluid source coupled to said respective ports for causing said fluid to be emitted from the face of each said saw guide.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim
44 words
The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said mounting means includes means for tiltably mounting at least one of said saw guides so as to permit the face of said guide to assume a parallel position with respect to the side of said saw blade.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim
43 words
The apparatus of claim 2 wherein said tiltably mounted saw guide has a plenum chamber formed in its side opposite to its face, and wherein passageway means are provided in communication with said plenum chamber for delivering pressurized fluid to said plenum chamber.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim
36 words
The apparatus of claim 1 including electrical circuit means coupling said saw guide assembly with said saw blade for generating a signal whenever deflections of said saw blade cause said blade to touch said guide assembly.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim
144 words
A guide assembly for a saw blade which comprises: a. a pair of saw guides positioned on either side of said saw blade in opposed facing relationship to one another, each said saw guide having a substantially flat face; b. mounting means for holding said saw guides in said opposed positions with their respective faces substantially parallel with the sides of said blade, said mounting means including means for holding said saw guides apart at a distance greater than the thickness of said saw blade and also including means for restraining said saw guides against movement toward one another from said spaced positions; c. said mounting means further including means for tiltably mounting at least one of said saw guides so as to permit the face of said guide to adjustably assume a parallel position with respect to the side of said saw blade.
Claim 8
Claim 9
Independent Claim
186 words
A method of guiding a saw blade which comprises: a. mounting a pair of flat-faced saw guides in opposed facing relationship to one another on either side of said saw blade such that the face of each guide is spaced a predetermined distance from a respective side of said saw blade when said blade is in a normal undeflected position, so as to form a gap of predetermined size between each said guide face and said undeflected saw blade; b. introducing a pressurized fluid into each of said gaps so as to cause said fluid to flow through said gaps, the predetermined size of each said gap and the velocity of said fluid being such as to cause said flow of fluid to exert a suction on each side of said undeflected saw blade in accordance with the Bernoulli principle, and further being such as to cause said suction, due to blade deflections, to decrease as the respective gap size is decreased and to increase as the respective gap size is increased so as to provide a restoring force responsive to deflections of said saw blade.
