Heat resistant compositions

Claim 2

AHEAT RESISTANT COMPOSITION COMPRISING: A. A MAJOR AMOUNT OF PETROLATUM; B. A MINOR AMOUNT OF A PARTIALLY CROSS-LINKED POLYMER HAVING A SOLUBILITY PARAMETER WITHIN ABOUT 0.5 UNIT OF THE SOLUBILITY PARAMETER OF SAID PETROLATUM AND CHARACTERIZED BY BEING CAPABLE OF BECOMING SWELLED BY SAID PETROLATUM; SAID AOUNTS BASED ON THE TOTAL OF (A) AND (B); AND C. A MULTITUDE OF HOLLOW, SYNTHETIC THERMOPLASTIC PARTICLES.

Claim 3

A heat resistant composition according to claim 1 wherein said petrolatum is present in an amount between about 68 and about 97 weight percent; said partially cross-linked polymer is present in an amount between about 1 and about 17 weight percent; and said multitude of hollow, synthetic thermoplastic particles is present in an amount between about 2 and about 15 weight percent, based upon the weight of said particles prior to expansion.

Claim 4

A heat resistant composition according to claim 1 wherein said petrolatum has a consistency at room temperature between a liquid having a viscosity of about 100 SUS and a semi-solid gelatinous mass having a melting point of abouT 60* C; said partially cross-linked polymer is selected from the group consisting of polyisobutene, polyisobutylene, copolymers of butadiene and styrene, polyisoprene, ethylene propylene rubber, poly(isobornyl methacrylate), homopolymers and copolymers of tertiary-alkylstyrenes, n-alkylstyrenes, sec-alkylstyrenes, and isoalkylstyrenes, and copolymers of tertiary-alkylstyrenes, n-alkylstyrenes, sec-alkylstyrenes and isoalkylstyrenes and at least one other copolymerizable monomer selected from the group consisting of alkenyl aromatic compounds, acrylic acid esters, vinyl esters of aliphatic carboxylic acid esters, alkyl vinyl ethers, alkyl vinyl ketones, alpha-olefins, isoolefins, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, diolefins, Alpha , Beta -monoethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acids, amides, hydroxy acrylic esters, and sulphonic acids; and said hollow, synthetic thermoplastic particles are prepared from a polymer selected from the group consisting of copolymers of methyl methacrylate and acrylonitrile, vinylidene chloride and acrylonitrile, styrene and acrylonitrile, styrene and methyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate, methyl methacrylate and orthochlorostyrene, acrylonitrile and vinylidene chloride, methyl methacrylate and p-tertiary-butylstyrene, methyl methacrylate and vinyl acetate, methyl methacrylate and butyl acrylate, poly(orthochlorostyrene), and poly(vinyl-benzyl chloride).

Claim 5

A heat resistant composition according to claim 3 wherein said petrolatum has a viscosity of about 332 SUS, said partially cross-linked polymer is poly(p-tert-butylstyrene), and said hollow, synthetic thermoplastic particles are prepared from a copolymer of styrene and acrylonitrile.

Claim 6

A heat resistant composition according to claim 1 wherein said partially cross-linked polymer contains between about 0.01 and about 2 weight percent cross-linking agent.
