Abstract THIS DISCLOSURE INVOLVES ESTERS OF HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE AND HYDROXYPROPYL STARCH, SPECIFICALLY THE ACETATE AND LAURATE. THESE CELLULOWE ESTERS ARE USEFUL AS GELLING AGENTS FOR ORGANIC SOLVENTS. THE HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE ACETATE IS PREPARED AT LOW COST UNDER MILD CONDITIONS AND IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL IN GELLING METHYLENE CHLORIDE (USEFUL IN PAINT STRIPPING) AND METHYL AND ETHYLENE BROMIDE (USEFUL AS SOIL FUMIGANTS). THE HYDROXYPROPYL CELLULOSE AURATE IS PARTICULARLY USEFUL AS A GELLING AGENT FOR JET FUEL.
