Abstract

Abstract A ventilator capable of both pressure-cycled and volume-cycled operation. A main valve connects a gas supply conduit to a downstream conduit when the pressure in a command signal conduit reaches a first predetermined pressure level and closes off the downstream conduit from the gas supply conduit when the pressure in the command signal conduit drops below a second predetermined pressure level. In the expiratory cycle, the command signal conduit and the downstream conduit are bled to atmospheric. The inspiratory cycle may be initiated (1) by the patient breathing in and thereby lowering airway pressure, or (2) after a time lapse following the commencement of said expiratory phase, the duration of said time lapse being determined as a set multiple of the time of the preceding inspiratory phase. The expiratory phase may be initiated (1) by the achievement of a predetermined airway pressure or (2) upon the delivery of a predetermined volume of gas.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 361 words
A device for controlling the duration of delivery of gas and the volume of gas delivered, characterized in that a change in duration does not affect the volume delivered, said device being adapted to be used in combination with first and second conduits, and supply means for supplying said first conduit at a substantially constant pressure, comprising: pneumatically actuated valve means having an inlet adapted to be connected to said first conduit and having an outlet, volume control means for determining the volume to be delivered, having an inlet connected to the outlet of said valve means and an outlet adapted to be connected to said second conduit and having an adjustable area of passage from its inlet to its outlet determined by the relative position of two orifices, one said orifice being stationary and connected to the inlet, the second said orifice being movable and connected to the outlet, the position of the second orifice in relation to the first being set by a two-mode actuation comprising an angular rotation and an axial displacement, said volume control means having volume setting means for setting the volume delivered by relative angular rotation of said orifices, timing means comprising a time-setting means for setting the duration of delivery, said time-setting means being directly mechanically connected to said second orifice for axial displacement thereof, so that the magnitude of displacement is proportional to the inverse of the duration of delivery, said timing means also comprising an adjustable metering valve having an inlet suitably connected to the inlet of said volume control means and having an outlet, the opening of the metering valve also being set by said time setting means, pneumatically actuated cycling means having a capacity chamber connected to the outlet of said metering valve, said cycling means being connected to said valve means, for (a) actuating said valve means to close when the pressure in said capacity chamber reaches a predetermined level (b) opening said capacity chamber to atmosphere as soon as said valve means is closed, and then, after a predetermined delay (c) actuating the valve means to open and (d) closing the communication from said capacity chamber to atmosphere.
Claim 2
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 79 words
The device of claim 1 having a pressure regulator connected to the outlet of said valve means and connected to the inlet of said volume control means, the pressure of said capacity chamber being applied as a signal to said pressure regulator in order to modify the setting of said pressure regulator as a function of the time elapsed since the start of the delivery and thereby to determine a preset flow pattern for the duration of the delivery.
