Abstract
Abstract A mass flow air meter for use in a mass air flow type electronic fuel injection system for an engine to measure mass air flow through an air induction system including a scheduled area valve consisting of a butterfly valve cooperating with scheduled valve throat area openings whereby the pressure drop in the induction passage through this valve is held approximately constant during changes in fluid flow by allowing the valve throat area openings to vary.

An air meter for use in an engine charge forming device for an engine having an air induction system with throttle means for controlling air flow therethrough to the combustion chambers of the engine, a fuel means for supplying fuel under pressure to the combustion chambers of the engine through separate fuel injectors and a system connected to the fuel injectors to maintain the flow of fuel from the fuel injectors proportional to the flow of air to the combustion chambers, said air meter having a housing positioned upstream of the throttle means and in communication therewith, a cross bore in said housing, a first contoured hole of continuous profile extending from one surface of said housing and running out at said cross bore, a second contoured hole of continuous profile, inverted with respect to said first contoured hole, extending from the opposite surface of said housing and running out at said cross bore, a straight edged valve plate rotatably mounted in said cross bore for movement between closed and open positions relative to said contoured holes, said valve plate when in an open position defining with said contoured holes a pair of air flow areas the size of which increases at a predetermined fixed rate relative to the valve plate angle, a servo mechanism responsive to air pressure upstream and downstream of said valve plate operatively connected to said valve plate to effect movement of said valve plate to maintain a constant depression across said valve plate, and signal means connected to said air meter to provide an air mass flow signal to the system to control the injection timing of the fuel injectors including a first signal means sensitive to the pressure in the air stream upstream of said valve plate, a second signal means to sense the temperature of air passing over said valve plate, a third signal means sensitive to the differential air pressure across said valve plate and a fourth signal means responsive to the angular position of said throttle plate to provide a mass air flow indication.
