Abstract

Abstract A method of bonding rubber to magnesium and its alloys, which comprises cleaning and etching the metal surface, applying a coat of thermosetting nitrile-phenolic adhesive to the cleaned and etched metal surface, drying the adhesive, curing the adhesive to form an impervious film, and cooling the cured adhesive-bearing structure to room temperature. Then, applying a coat of the same adhesive to the surface of both the rubber to be bonded to the metal and to the cured film of adhesive on the metal, drying the coatings, associating the adhesive-coated parts in adhesive contacting relationship, and curing the uncured adhesive by sufficient heating while applying pressure thereto. Excellent printing rolls can be made this way.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 3
Claim 1
Independent Claim 30 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the adhesive is applied to the magnesium surface in an amount to produce a cured film thickness of from about 2 to 6 mils.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 63 words
The method of claim 1 wherein the rubber-resin adhesive is a curable nitrile-phenolic composition containing a copolymer of about 59 percent butadiene and about 41 percent acrylonitrile, the rubber:resin ratio is in the range of from about 1:0.5 to 1.5, and the solids content of the adhesive is about 20 to 30 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition.
Claim 3
Independent Claim 254 words
A method of bonding a synthetic rubber roll cover to the surface of a magnesium roll comprising cleaning the roll surface, etching the roll surface by flooding it with a 10 percent solution of nitric acid in water, removing the acid from the roll surface by immediately flooding it with water, drying the etched roll surface, immediately applying to the prepared roll surface a coat of a solvent-type curable nitrile-phenolic adhesive containing a copolymer of about 59 percent butadiene and about 41 percent acrylonitrile in an amount to produce a cured film having a thickness in the range of 2 to 6 mils, and wherein the rubber: resin ratio is in the range of about 1:0.5 to 1.5 and the solids content of the adhesive is about 20 to 30 percent by weight based on the total weight of the composition, drying the adhesive, curing the adhesive to form an oil-impervious film about 2 to 6 mils thick, cooling the adhesive-coated roll to room temperature, applying a coat of said adhesive to both the inner surface of the roll cover and to the cured coat of adhesive on the roll, said coatings being applied in an amount to result in a cured dry coat on each having a cured thickness in the range of 2 to 6 mils, the total adhesive thickness not to exceed about 12 mils, drying the adhesive coatings, associating the adhesive-coated parts in adhesive-contacting relationship, and curing the uncured adhesive by heating while applying pressure to the parts being bonded.
