Abstract

Abstract A surfboard which is constructed by molding two halves that each extend across the entire length of the board but across only half of the width, and joining the halves together with a thick layer of epoxy resin which also serves as a beam that strengthens the board against bending. Each half of the board has a fiberglass skin and a body of foam within the fiberglass skin, but the foam is cut away at the top and bottom of the inner surface so that the epoxy resin adheres to a large area of the fiberglass skin. The epoxy resin in the cut-away areas forms top and bottom flanges for the structural beam of epoxy resin.

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 15 words
The surfboard described in claim 1 wherein: said layer of hardened adhesive comprises epoxy resin.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 160 words
A surfboard comprising: first and second elongated surfboard portions, each extending in a direction along the length of the surfboard and each extending across approximately half the width of the surfboard; and a thick layer of hardened adhesive extending along the height of the surfboard between the two surfboard portions and joining them together, whereby to form a strengthening beam which also joins the surfboard portions, each of said surfboard portions including a body occupying most of the volume thereof and a cover layer of tough material disposed about substantially all of the body except on an inner surface of the body which faces the layer of adhesive, said body being cut away along the top and bottom of said inner surface; and said layer of adhesive extending into said cut away regions, whereby to provide a large area of contact with the cover layers and to form flanges at the top and bottom of the beam of hardened adhesive.
Claim 5
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 175 words
A surfboard comprising: first and second elongated surfboard portions, each extending in a direction along the length of the surfboard and each extending across approximately half the width of the surfboard; and a thick layer of hardened adhesive extending along the height of the surfboard between the two surfboard portions and joining them together, whereby to form a strengthening beam which also joins the surfboard portions, each of said surfboard portions including a body occupying most of the volume thereof and a cover layer of tough material with an inner face facing the body, said cover layer disposed about substantially all of the body except on an inner surface of the body which faces the layer of adhesive, said cover layer extending beyond the top and bottom of said body at the inner surface thereof; and said layer of adhesive extending along the inner face of the cover layer along the portions thereof which extend beyond the body, along a width of the cover layer which is greater than the thickness of the cover layer.
Claim 7
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 95 words
A surfboard comprising: first and second elongated surfboard portions, each extending in a direction along the length of the surfboard and each extending across approximately half the width of the surfboard, each surfboard portion including a body of lightweight material occupying most of the volume thereof; and a thick layer of hardened adhesive extending along the height of the surfboard between the two surfboard portions and joining directly to said bodies of lightweighT material of the two surfboard portions to hold them together, whereby to form a strengthening beam which also joins the surfboard portions.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 95 words
A surfboard comprising: first and second elongated surfboard portions, each extending in a direction along the length of the surfboard and each extending across approximately half the width of the surfboard, each surfboard portion including a body of lightweight material occupying most of the volume thereof; and a thick layer of hardened adhesive extending along the height of the surfboard between the two surfboard portions and joining directly to said bodies of lightweighT material of the two surfboard portions to hold them together, whereby to form a strengthening beam which also joins the surfboard portions.
