Abstract A COATING METHOD FOR CONTROLLING THE INDEX OF REFRACTION OF A LAYER UPON A SUBSTRATE BY UTILIZING TWO COATING MATERIALS HAVING DIFFERENT INDICES OF REFRACTION BY EVAPORATING EACH OF THE COATING MATERIALS TO PROVIDE A VAPOR STREAM WHICH IMPINGES UPON THE SUBSTRATE AND MASKING THE SUBSTRATES FROM THE VAPOR STREAM TO PROVIDE A VAPOR STREAM CARRYING THE COATING MATERIALS TO THE SUBSTRATE IN A PROPORTION RELATED TO THE DESIRED INDEX OF REFRACTION.
