Abstract

Abstract Apparatus for accurately magnetically centering a movable member within an annular stator of an electric machine, such as an electric motor or generator or solenoid or the like so that the lateral spacing between the movable member and the stator is magnetically equal at all portions thereof. In one embodiment of the invention, as a rotor within a stator is rotated by energization of the stator, force sensor elements sense the forces which occur laterally between the stator and the rotor. The rotor and the stator are relatively laterally adjusted until the lateral forces between the rotor and the stator are substantially zero. When such lateral forces are substantially zero, the rotor is accurately magnetically positioned with the stator.
