Abstract

Abstract A tool holder having at least one cutting insert (blade) receiving slot that is formed in part by a pair of spools at adjacent small side areas of the slot. The spools are held at a finite angle with each other which matches the angle between adjacent edges of a blade to be inserted in the slot. The spools provide a ridge to contact blade edge surfaces for only a small portion of their width. An application of this blade positioning technique is a multiple indexible blade rotary tool holder. Indexible blades for use in a wide variety of tool holders have improved chip breaking grooves adjacent to its cutting edges in surfaces thereof which lead into the work piece.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 4
Claim 1
Independent Claim 155 words
A solid carbide cutting blade of the type having two opposite rectangularly shaped planar sides parallel with each other and a third rectangular side joining said parallel sides and at an acute angle with one of said parallel sides to form a cutting edge at the intersection thereof, the improvement comprising a plurality of chip breaking grooves formed in the cutting edge, each having a width along said cutting edge that is significantly less than the distance between said grooves along said edge, the bottom of each groove extending into said one of the parallel sides beginning a distance displaced from said cutting edge and at a small acute angle therewith and terminating at said third side at a location between said cutting edge and the other of said parallel sides, the bottoms of said grooves being oriented to run in the same general direction as said cutting edge except for said small acute angle.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 155 words
