Abstract A solid state light source includes a gallium arsenide phosphide electroluminescent semiconductor in a mesa structure, a substrate substantially transparent to the radiation emitted by the semiconductor, a region of varying composition connecting the substrate to the semiconductor, and a reflective backing.
