Abstract THE ELECTRODE DISTANCE IN ELECTROLYSIS CELLS WITH FLOWING MECURY CATHODE IS ADUSTED, FOR EXAMPLE IN THE ALKALI METAL CHLORIDE ELECTROLYSIS. THE ANODES OR GROUPS OR ANODES ARE BROUGHT CLOSE TO THE CATHODE UNTIL THE RATIOOF THE VARIATION OF THE AMPLITUDE OF THE CHARACTERISTIC ALTERNATING VOLTAGE OR CURRENT OCCURRING WITH SMALL ELECTRODE DISTANCES TO THE VARIATION OF THE DIRECT VOLTAGE OR CURRENT IN THE ELECTROLYSIS CELL IN THE SAME TIME INTERVAL HAS REACHED A PREDETERMINED VALUE.
