Abstract A PROCESS IS DISCLOSED FOR THE PREPARATION OF SYNTHETIC RUTILE STARTING FROM ILMENITE, CHARACTERIZED IN THAT IT COMPRISES A PRE-LEACHING OF THE ILMENITE WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID, FOLLOWED BY A REDUCTION OF THE PRE-LEACHED PRODUCT TO CONVERT TO FERROUS OXIDE THE HIGHER IRON OXIDES THEREIN, AND A SECOND LEACHING WITH HYDROCHLORIC ACID.
