Abstract
Abstract The forward end of the billet to be deformed, e.g., hydrostatically extruded, is provided with a shaped nose of material softer than the billet material. In another embodiment, a series of progressively softer noses is mounted to the forward end of the billet to be extruded. In yet another embodiment, the forward end of the billet is zone refined to provide a hardness gradient in the billet decreasing from a point spaced behind the forward end of the billet toward the said forward end.
