Abstract

Abstract Method and apparatus are provided for a novel continuous, automated melt-pour process for high explosives, such as TNT, wherein flaked high explosive is continuously introduced into a vessel containing an agitated pool of the molten explosive and providing a high ratio of heating surface to volume of explosive and the molten explosive is continuously pumped to a remote shell loading station through a heated pipe system provided with detonation traps which prevent propagation of an explosion. The invention described herein may be manufactured, used and licensed by or for the Government for governmental purposes without the payment to us of any royalty thereon.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 9
Claim 1
Independent Claim 222 words
Apparatus for continuously melting and pumping a molten high explosive such as TNT to a remote loading station, which comprises in combination: a. means for continuously melting solid explosive comprising a vertical cylindrical jacketed vessel, which comprises an axially aligned, rotatable hollow agitator mounted at the top of the vessel and terminating short of the bottom of the vessel and a height/diameter ratio greater than about three and is heated by circulation of a heating medium through said jacket and hollow agitator; b. means for continuously feeding solid explosive into said vessel; c. a jacket heated pipe system for transporting molten explosive from said vessel to the loading station; d. a pump for pressurizing and transporting molten explosive through said pipe system; e. detonation traps in said pipe system comprising a breakwire sensor positioned proximate a conduit of said pipe system, an electronic switch electrically connected to said breakwire and adapted to maintain said electronic switch non-operative when said breakwire is intact and to supply a voltage pulse when said breakwire is broken, and means, electrically connected and responsive to said electronic switch, disposed in said conduit to interrupt the conduit in response to said switch and thereby arrest an in-line detonation; and f. means for continuously controlling the feed of solid explosive into said vessel and flow of molten explosive therefrom.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 222 words

Claim 3
Dependent Claim 14 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, which comprises a means for preheating the solid explosive.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 21 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the pipe system is adapted to recycle the flow of molten explosive to said vessel.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 22 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the pump is selected from the group consisting of a diaphragm pump and a peristaltic pump.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 52 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the jacketed vessel comprises a top inlet for introducing solid explosive and a bottom outlet for discharging molten explosive, and the hollow agitator comprises a hollow shaft having a plurality of hollow paddles affixed thereto, said jacket, shaft and paddles being heated by steam circulated therethrough.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 29 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein the ratio of square feet of heating surface in contact with molten explosive to cubic feet of molten explosive is greater than five.
Claim 8
Dependent Claim 16 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said interrupting means is a valve for blocking said conduit.
Claim 9
Dependent Claim 21 words
Apparatus according to claim 1, wherein said interrupting means is a section of said conduit adapted to separate from said conduit.
