Abstract A PROCESS FOR PREPARING ALKENYLBENZENES, WHICH COMPRISES REACTING ALKYLBENZENES WITH 1,3-BUTADIENE AT AN ELEVATED TEMPERATURE IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ALKALI METAL CATALYST IN THE SUBSTANTIAL ABSENCE OF OXYGEN AND MOISTURE, WHEREIN SUCH CATALYST IS COMPOSED OF (1) 0.005 TO 0.4% BY WEIGHT, BASED ON THE ALKYLBENZENE, OF METALLIC POTASSIUM, AND (2) METALLIC SODIUM IN AN AMOUNT EXPRESSED BY THE FOLLOWING EQUATION (4.1X+2.0)$NA$(-0.073X+0.05) WHEREIN X REPRESENTS THE AMOUNT IN WEIGHT PERCENT OF THE METALLIC POTASSIUM.
