Abstract
Abstract PHENOLS ARE ORTHOALKYLATED BY REACTION WITH AN OLEFIN IN THE PRESENCE OF AN ALUMINUM PHENOXIDE AT 100-500*C. THE OLEFIN HAS THE STRUCTURE: R-CH=CH-R IN WHICH R IS A C1-5/ ALKYL, A C6-20 ARYL, OR HYDROGEN. THE PRODUCT IS AN ETHYL OR O-SEC-ALKYL PHENOL AND IS RECOVERED BY DISTILLING THE ALKYLATED PHENOLS DIRECTLY FROM THE ALKYLATION MIXTURE WITHOUT HYDROLYZING THE CATALYST. THE RESIDUE CAN THEN BE RECYCLED AS THE CATALYST. THE DISTILLATE IS FRACTIONED TO RECOVER PRODUCT. DI-O-ALKYLATED PHENOLS CAN BE RECYCLED TO THE ALKYLATION REACTION WHERE THEY SERVE TO TRANSALKYLATE THE STARTING PHENOLIC REACTANT.
