Abstract REFRACTORY METALS, ESPECIALLY COLUMBIUM, CAN BE PROTECTED FROM OXIDIZING ATMOSPHERES BY FORMING A CONTINUOUS LAYER OF REFRACTORY METAL DISILCIDE ON THE EXPOSED SURFACES. SUCH COATING CAN BE MADE BY FORMING THE SUBSILICIDE OF THE REFRACTORY METAL AND THEN CONVERTING AT LEAST A PART OF THE SUBSILICIDE TO THE CORRESPONDING DISILICIDE.
