Abstract

Abstract A heat shrinkable material comprising an oriented plastic openmesh netting member which is completely enclosed within a plastic film member, with the netting member not being fixedly secured to the film member whereby the netting member may move relative to the film member during tearing, for example. When the material is shrunk, it will shrink substantially uniformly due to the orientation of the netting member. Methods are provided for making this material.

Claims Analysis

Total Claims: 7
Claim 1
Independent Claim 18 words
The material of claim 1 wherein the netting member and the film member are of a polyolefin resin.
Claim 2
Dependent Claim 23 words
The material of claim 1 wherein the netting member comprises a plurality of strands which cross each other at other than 90* angles.
Claim 3
Dependent Claim 21 words
The material of claim 1 wherein the netting member comprises a plurality of strands which cross each other at 90* angles.
Claim 4
Dependent Claim 19 words
The material of claim 1 wherein the netting member has biaxial heat shrinking capabilities of at least 10 percent.
Claim 5
Dependent Claim 34 words
The material of claim 1 wherein when the material is shrunk the netting member will shrink substantially uniformly and carry the film member with it thereby to impart substantially uniform shrinkage to the material.
Claim 6
Dependent Claim 19 words
The material of claim 1 wherein the netting member is nonheatset polypropylene and the film member is nonoriented polyethylene.
Claim 7
Dependent Claim 120 words
A reinforced packaging material comprising: a self-sustaining heat shrinkable thermoplastic netting member and a self-sustaining heat shrinkable thermoplastic film member completely enclosing the netting member; the netting member being biaxially oriented and consisting of a plurality of interconnected strands defining openings therebetween; the film member being nonoriented and having solid first and second outer surfaces and a channel network therewithin; the netting member being freely movable within the channel network of the film member; and wherein when the material is shrunk the netting member shrinks substantially uniformly and carries the film member with it and wherein when the material is torn the strands of the netting member accumulate ahead of the tear to provide greater tear resistance to the material.
